Step 1: Area by shape

Everything starts with area, measured in square feet. The formula depends on the shape you're measuring, and the skill is breaking a real yard into shapes you can handle.

For an irregular yard, calculate each shape and add them: a lawn of one rectangle (1,000) plus a triangle (300) is 1,300 square feet total.

Step 2: Add the waste factor

Sod comes in fixed sizes, so fitting it around edges and curves means trimming pieces you can't reuse. The formula bumps your area up by a waste percentage:

Order area = measured area × (1 + waste% ÷ 100)

For 1,300 square feet with a 10% waste factor: 1,300 × 1.10 = 1,430 square feet to order. Use around 5% for simple rectangles and 10% or more for complex, curvy yards.

Step 3: Convert to rolls, slabs and pallets

Suppliers sell whole units, so you divide by the coverage of one unit and round up. Coverage varies, so use your supplier's figures where you can — these are common defaults:

Step 4: Topsoil for the rooting bed

If you're prepping the ground with fresh topsoil, the volume is measured in cubic yards because that's how soil is sold and delivered. The formula converts your area and a target depth in inches into cubic yards:

Cubic yards = area (ft²) × (depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27

The "÷ 12" turns inches into feet; the "÷ 27" turns cubic feet into cubic yards (since a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet). For 1,300 square feet at 3 inches deep: 1,300 × 0.25 ÷ 27 ≈ 12 cubic yards. Two to four inches is a common target for a healthy rooting layer.

Step 5: Starter fertilizer

Starter fertilizer is estimated from a coverage rate, roughly one pound of product per 200 to 250 square feet as a planning figure — though the real rate is whatever your product's bag specifies. The formula is simply:

Pounds of product = area (ft²) ÷ coverage per pound

For 1,300 square feet at 250 square feet per pound: 1,300 ÷ 250 ≈ 5.2 pounds. Treat this as a starting estimate and always defer to the label rate for your specific fertilizer.
