Sod isn't just grass — it's grass plus a backing layer of soil and roots, and it's usually delivered damp so it stays alive. All that moisture and soil adds up fast. A patch that looks manageable can weigh several pounds per square foot, which means a whole lawn's worth runs into thousands of pounds. This is the number that catches people out on delivery day, so it's worth working out before you commit to picking it up yourself.
What drives the weight
- Moisture. Freshly watered or rain-soaked sod is markedly heavier than sod that's drained.
- Cut thickness. Thicker soil backing means more weight per square foot.
- Grass type. Dense, soil-heavy cuts weigh more than thin ones.
- Total area. Weight scales directly with square footage — double the lawn, double the load.
Planning transport and handling
Once you know the weight, the logistics get clear. A few rolls fit in most vehicles; a pallet needs a rated truck or trailer and something to unload it — a pallet jack, a few strong helpers, or a supplier who can place it where you want. Freshly cut, moist sod typically weighs about 2.5 to 3.5 pounds per square foot, depending on soil moisture, the thickness it's cut and the grass type. Wetter sod weighs more. The calculator uses an adjustable rate so you can match your supplier's product.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
A pallet of sod commonly weighs between 1,500 and 3,000 pounds — often around three-quarters of a ton to a ton and a half — because it holds roughly 450 square feet of moist, soil-backed grass. Always check your vehicle and equipment can handle that load before picking one up.
Can I transport sod in my truck or trailer?
For small orders of rolls or a few pieces, many pickups can manage. A full pallet, however, weighs well over a ton and needs a properly rated truck or trailer and a way to unload it. If in doubt, arrange delivery — it's safer and often worth the fee.
