Step 4: Topsoil for the rooting bed

The "÷ 12" turns inches into feet; the "÷ 27" turns cubic feet into cubic yards (since a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet). For 1,300 square feet at 3 inches deep: 1,300 × 0.25 ÷ 27 ≈ 12 cubic yards. Two to four inches is a common target for a healthy rooting layer.
Step 5: Starter fertilizer
